About Us

The Organization

Capital District Grass Doubles (CDGD) is an organization that seeks to encourage participation in volleyball through promotion of summer volleyball tournaments within the Albany, New York area. CDGD has been running 2-on-2 competitive grass volleyball tournaments for almost 20 years.

Pick-Up

CDGD promotes volleyball in the area by announcing a place to play pick-up volleyball two nights out of the week. Pick-up is free and requires you to bring a partner to the pick-up location. Pick-up works like this: you go to a court that appears to be running the same format that you would like to play (i.e. men's, women's, coed). If the net is holding competition that is within your range announce that you would like to challenge on that court. The team's playing will let you know where you stand in line (in case there are any challenges before your match). Your first match on the net you challenge will begin when your turn in the order of team's that have challenged comes up. Starting in the summer of 2006, a pick-up game should be rally to 21 or 25, but it is up to the owner of the net you are playing what the format of the game is. Other things to bring to pick-up include a volleyball, a net if you have one, mosquito repelant, water, etc. See our pick-up web page for more information.

Tournaments

CDGD hosts 6 - 8 tournaments each summer within the Albany, NY area. Our tournaments are held on the weekend with each day featuring a different format. Saturday's format consists of 2x2 competition for same sex pairings (i.e. a pair of women compete against another pair of women). Sunday's format consists of 2x2 competition coed reverse pairings (coed reverse means that women hit at the net, and men hit behind a 10 ft. line placed on the court). Our tournaments feature a range of levels and typically we have Open, (AA on Sunday), A, BB, B competition. All tournaments consist of pool play with playoffs following. Starting in 2006, all games will be to 21 or 25 using the rally scoring system. Entry fees for tournaments are $40.00 dollars per team if you pre-pay or pre-register. See our registration web page for more information. Prizes are generally awarded to the top two finishers in each level, with the top two levels receiving cash and the remaining levels receiving prizes. For each levels that has more than 2 pools, the 3rd and 4th place teams will receive cash or prizes. We guarantee a cash prize of $200 a team for 1st place (4 teams make a pool) and $100 a team for 2nd place in Open. We increase these amounts as the number of teams increase. For the A level, we guarantee $80 a team for 1st and $40 a team for second. Quality prizes are consistently given out to winners in non-cash levels.

AVP Next Association

CDGD is aligned with the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) through its grass roots volleyball program, "AVP Next". Everyone playing a CDGD tournament must be a registered member of the AVP Next. The AVP Next provides CDGD with insurance coverage for its tournaments and supplies CDGD with prizes to give out to those who place in our tournaments. The AVP Next also collects the results of each tournament in order to rank each player's finish, with the intent of provoding a ranking to each player within the AVP Next system. The AVP hopes that its grass roots program will grow large enough so that it may one day have a national tournament played on grass.

Tournament Perks

  • Lunch is free - each tournament we order out for pizza and provide water all day
  • Serving Contest - each player (male/female) who serves the most untouched aces in pool play gets movie tickets
  • Player Points - those players that break pool and move on each round earn player points that get tallied up at the end of the year and translate into cash or prizes. See our players points web page for more info.
